Marc-Andre Cournoyer Joins Standout Jobs

by Benjamin Yoskovitz

We’re very pleased to announce that we’ve hired our first employee.

Marc-Andre Cournoyer will be employee #1 at Standout Jobs. He’s our first Ruby Guru.

Marc-Andre saw our video job ad and applied in a fun, unique way - sending in a script of code that led us to his online resume. He’s an active participant in the open source community and a prolific developer of side projects.

Marc-Andre is also an entrepreneur-in-the-making. I have no doubt in the years to come that Marc-Andre will start his own companies, and hopefully his experience with Standout Jobs will help prepare him for that. His interest in entrepreneurship is demonstrated through what he learns and reads; it’s not just about code and development, but about business and life as well.

Welcome aboard Marc-Andre!

Meetup Takes On Google In Recruiting Wars

by Benjamin Yoskovitz

Companies need to stand out when recruiting. Otherwise, you won’t find the best talent. It’s really as simple as that.

Working at MeetupCEO of Meetup, Scott Heiferman, put together a hilarious document comparing his company with the great beast of recruiting, Google.

It’s a funny, but open, honest and authentic look into what Scott believes makes Meetup interesting and unique. It works because Scott recognizes the power and effectiveness of Google’s employment brand and he matches up against it head-to-head.

The result is not dissimilar to the feeling you get when you watch the Connected Ventures video. In a few minutes you get a very clear picture of what Meetup is all about, and you can make a better-educated decision as to whether you’d like to work there.

Go check out what it’s like to work at Meetup.

Do You Want To Work For Connected Ventures?

by Benjamin Yoskovitz

You might want to after you watch the video they produced. It’s a hilarious look at Connected Ventures from the inside. In a few minutes you get a better sense of what these guys are all about - their culture, team, spirit, style - than you could from anything else.

Michael Arrington notes “…they should use this as one of their primary recruiting tools.”

We wholeheartedly agree.

Although Connected Ventures doesn’t promote a specific job in the video, they are hiring. And by producing this type of video content they’re giving candidates a very clear signal as to what they’re looking for in people.

L.A.-based Entrepreneur looking for a CTO

by Fred Ngo

We were sent this interesting Wired Magazine article about Deena Varshavskaya, a L.A.-based entrepreneur, and her efforts at recruiting a CTO through a YouTube video.

The author of the article hit it right on when he said:

This is the new face of transparency and social media we keep hearing about. As I watched this video I found myself truly admiring Varshavskaya’s willingness to put herself out there in such a way. There’s no way a four-minute video will tell you everything you need to know about a potential employer or business partner, but this kind of video is a great start.

Good luck on your search Deena! If I weren’t already involved with Standout Jobs, I might actually be tempted… ;-)
