Standout Jobs: Ruby Guru
Standout Jobs is a new Montreal-based startup founded by Fred Ngo, Benjamin Yoskovitz and Austin Hill.
We believe:
- The job market is broken.
- Online job sites don’t work.
- Hiring people should be an ongoing process.
- Hiring people is about having conversations not bureaucracy.
Standout Jobs will change the face of recruiting.
But first, we need to build a core team of entrepreneurial-minded people, ready to change the game.
Standout Jobs is hiring a Ruby Guru.
We want to know if you:
- Love Ruby.
- Thoroughly familiar with the Rails framework.
- Believe in clean code, iterative development and quick prototyping.
- Love architecting and designing systems from scratch.
- Have experience launching 1.0 products.
- Have startup experience.
- Won’t crumble under pressure.
- Believe in the value of social media and networking, but not the hype.
- Dream of running your own startup someday.
- Believe in giving back, participating in the community and doing good.
How many of your answers were “yes”?
As our Ruby Guru you’ll be a core contributor to the success of Standout Jobs. You’ll be building great applications and have a significant role in launching a startup company from the ground up.
Before you send your resume over, ask yourself, “How will I stand out as a Ruby Guru?” Then send us what you’ve got. We want to start a conversation with you and see if you’re the perfect person for the job.
Send us your stuff at rubyguru@standoutjobs.com
Note: This is a full-time position in Montreal.

You guys are on the right track. The hiring market has been broken for years. Part of the problem is no one likes to hire those smarter than themselves. Putting a lid on progress…
You go guys!!!!
[…] the first member of our core team, and Ben and I made a special video to commemorate the occasion. Check it out and tell me what you […]
Awesome concept, good luck
Dave and Rami - Thank you for the feedback, it’s very much appreciated.
Dave - I believe in hiring smarter than me. It’s something we’re totally focused on doing right now.
This is truly an awesome idea. Social media and networking married to job searching.
I wish my Ruby and Rails was at the Guru stage. (Lots of years in development - Perl, PHP, VB, ASP, Java etc, but Ruby is new to me).
I’ll keep an eye on you guys and see what happens in the future. Good luck!
John - Glad you like it. Thanks for the kind words. Keep an eye on what we’re up to, should be fun!
Great idea guys. I’ve got most of what you’re looking for but unfortunately, I already have a full time job. I’ve been pushing Ruby ever since I came in contact with it in 2001. When Rails came out, I jumped on the bandwagon and I’m still in love with Rails and what it can do but I don’t have much time to work with it. I know you’re on the right track since you’re looking for somebody with Rails experience. Best of luck to you.
Why stop at the employer/employee relationship? I’m a partner in an ISV in Montreal and we are constantly looking to build partnerships with resellers, vars, integrators, consultants, but those types of relationships are tricky and require either lots of contracts and monitoring, or lots of trust. I see b2b social networking as a big opportunity, to build those types of relationships.
Darrel - There are some good ideas in what you’re talking about, and we’ve thought about some of those. But the problem with expanding the idea is that it expands the idea. At some point you start to lose some focus, end up doing too much, and serve no one well. But I do see opportunities in what you’re talking about, so I appreciate the comment.

Too bad you guys aren’t hiring people that are based remotely
Gary — Some day we may hire people remotely, and certainly if/when we outsource any smaller development work we’d consider it, so stay in touch! (The same goes for any Ruby Gurus not in Montreal.)

Hi, I would love to help promote your company to any people that are having difficulty catching on to what I agree is the new face of job recruiting. I started by bookmarking you on del.icio.us. I’m thinking about some people who are familiar with the problem you are addressing (I know many), but who aren’t too sure about how to jump on a moving train (the new Web). Many of these people are in charge of hiring at larger companies. Check out my website, and feel free to contact me if you think I could be of service. Best wishes for your success!!
Laura - thanks for the comment and the positive words.
We’re launching on Monday with something bigger than just video job posts, so I hope you’ll check that out and get back to me after if you think there are opportunities to work together.
